UNITY — The annual celebration of the fall harvest that’s come to be known across the state as the Common Ground Country Fair launches Friday for three days of events featuring more than 1,000 exhibitors and speakers.
The fair that touts agricultural life and rural living in Maine opens on the 200 acres of fields and forest owned by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
People were busy Tuesday setting up stages and booths in anticipation of more than 60,000 people who are expected to attend this year. Many people will be camping over the weekend at sites near the fairgrounds.
The first Common Ground Country Fair was held in 1977 at the Litchfield fairgrounds. The crowds grew each year and the fair migrated to Windsor before the land was purchased in Unity in 1996. The first Common Ground fair was held there in 1998. The land also offers a year-round agricultural education center operated by MOFGA.
