50 Years Ago: 1973

The Philharmonic Club is opening a new season Friday. Mrs. Deborah Gilbert and Mrs. Phillip Emerson will prepare a chicken dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel on Park Street, Lewiston.

Miss Lillian Soule will lead the collect at the eight o’clock business meeting at which President Mrs. Richard Parker will preside.

At the musical program to follow, Miss Alice Sanborn will present organ selections and vocal selections will be presented by Fred Weatherly who will sing Danny Boy and Mrs. Parker whose selection will be How Great Thou Art. Mrs. Dawn Conant Grant, program chairman, will provide piano accompaniment.

Rev. Peter Voorthuyzen of Sabattus is presenting two groups of violin solos, Minuet by Boccherini, On Wings of Song by Mendelsohn, and Air for G String by Beethoven. The second group to be presented later in the program includes In Times Like These, My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less and A Wonderful Savior.

Of particular interest will be two vocal solos by Mrs. Lester Thomas taken from an operetta she has written, The Moment I Met You and I’m Coming Home to Paradise.

Raymond Corey, with Alice Sanborn as accompanist, will lead the general singing.

25 Years Ago: 1998

Lewiston: Political cartoons featuring the late U.S. Sen. and Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie drawn by nationally syndicated cartoonist Pat Oliphant will be featured through May 30, 1999 at Bates College Muskie Room.
