CHICAGO — Rookie Brandon Pfaadt pitched shutout ball for the second time in three starts, and the Arizona Diamondbacks moved closer to an NL wild card berth by beating the Chicago White Sox 3-0 Wednesday for their eighth win in 10 games.
Corbin Carroll hit a two-run double in a three-run third, and Tommy Pham had an RBI single for the Diamondbacks, who were outhit 8-4.
“We know it’s right in front of us,” Arizona Manager Torey Lovullo said. “We control our own destiny in this particular situation, and get into the playoffs as a wild card team.”
Arizona (84-74) began the day in second place in the NL wild-card race, one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs and 1 1/2 ahead of Miami.
Pfaadt (3-9) scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked none in 5 2/3 innings, and Jose Frias, Andrew Saalfrank, Ryan Thompson and Paul Sewald completed the Diamondbacks’ 11th shutout this season. Sewald worked around Lenyn Sosa’s double in the ninth for his 34th save in 39 chances.
METS 11, MARLINS 2: Pete Alonso was 4 for 4 with a homer, Francisco Lindor also went deep and drove in four runs, and host New York pounded playoff-chasing Miami in the first game of a doubleheader.
Braxton Garrett (9-7) was tagged early in a costly loss for the Marlins, who began the day a half-game behind the Cubs for the final National League wild card.
NOTES
GUARDIANS: Terry Francona made it to the home finale, his last game managing the Guardians before retirement.
His beloved scooter didn’t get there.
Just hours before Cleveland fans saluted the popular manager, who is leaving baseball after 11 seasons with the club, Francona revealed that the celebrated motorized scooter he rode to and from Progressive Field for the past several seasons was stolen for the second time.
“The hog has been officially put on ice,” Francona said, using the pet nickname for his ride before Wednesday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. “It got stolen again, but this time they stripped it.”
Francona said the two-wheeled vehicle was taken about 10 days ago. It was stolen in January but was recovered by police.
Although he hasn’t officially announced his retirement, Francona is expected to do so formally early next week.
“The worst kept secret ever,” Francona joked Tuesday.
Francona didn’t want a special ceremony for his final home game, but he relented to the team handing out 20,000 “Thank You Tito” T-shirts.
Francona has battled serious health issues in recent years and wants to move on before the game beats him up further.
“It got harder,” he said. “That’s why I’m going to shut it down. … I’m going to go get my body patched up again for about the 80th time and I’m going to try to go get healthy and I’m in no rush.”
PHILLIES: Philadelphia will turn to its top two pitchers to open the postseason, with Zack Wheeler getting the Game 1 nod in a National League wild-card series opener next Tuesday, and Aaron Nola starting Game 2 the following day.
The Phillies clinched the top wild-card seed with a win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday and have four more games to give starters rest and tinker with the pitching staff.
DIAMONDBACKS: Right-hander Zach Davies was designated for assignment by Arizona, which recalled rookie right-hander Justin Martinéz from Triple-A Reno before Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
