POLAND — The Select Board agreed by consensus Tuesday night to let residents pursue land for outdoor pickle ball courts.

Scott Segal, Poland Parks and Recreation director, and Judy Stone came before the board to get approval to publicly request a land donation for two public pickle ball courts.

Segal said his department has offered pickle ball at the Poland Community School gym for eight years but the slots go quickly, triggering a waiting list.

Stone, an avid pickle ball player, said many Poland residents play at public courts that are available in neighboring Casco, Otisfield and Oxford.

Segal said the lower fields behind the Poland Community School are the only town property that would suit the need but it is very buggy.

If property does become available, the board would have to get town approval to accept it as a gift.

Segal and Stone said if a property owner does come forward to donate property funds they’ll initiate a fundraiser to build two courts.

Segal estimated the cost of two public courts at $60,000. Access and a parking area would also be required.
