Timothy “Tim” Francis Mynahan
LEWISTON – Timothy “Tim” Francis Mynahan, 85, passed away Oct. 9, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Lewiston, Maine on Oct. 20,1937, the son of Timothy Sr. and Agnes (Coulombe) Mynahan – into a loving and caring home he shared with his four siblings. Tim attended Saint Joseph’s Grammar school and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1957. With a passion for education and a strong work ethic, he enrolled at the University of Maine at Orono, receiving his Maine Teachers’ Certification. Following this he was awarded a scholarship and pursued a teaching degree from Saint Mary’s University in Halfax, Nova Scotia, where was captain of his football team. He understood the importance of education and the value of hard work and was very proud of his many accomplishments.
On Aug. 6, 1966, Tim married the love of his life and his soulmate, Bernadette French.Together they built a beautiful life together and made their home on Dyer Road, raising three sons – Patrick, Timothy, and Joseph. This was the place for family and friends to gather often, creating memories that will be cherished forever by all. Tim and Bernie loved having visitors and had a natural way of making everyone feel welcome. Tim was in his element when on his tractor and working around his home. He would often be
seen waving to his brother Dick across the street or reading a book in one of his many rocking chairs, after a full day outside.
Tim was a leader in so many ways and he had a passion for mentoring and teaching the youth. He taught at Greene Central School and in the Lisbon school system for over 36 years. During this time, he coached Lisbon High School football for 20 years. For 24 years he was the Director of Recreation throughout the school year and again full-time during summers. From 1980 to 1983 Tim was Chairman of the LHS School Committee, a member of the Building Study Committee, and on the Supervising Committee for Lisbon Community FCU for over 20 years.
Tim’s role as a husband, father, and grandfather was unmatched. He truly adored Bernadette (Bernie, BB) and together they encouraged their sons to follow their dreams, emphasized the importance of hard work, and to further their education. They were often seen at a field, in a hockey rink, or attending one of the many activities the boys were involved in. Following the tragic loss of their son Tim in 1991, he and Bernie established the Timothy J. Mynahan Foundation and organized an annual golf tournament that awarded college scholarships to Lewiston High School seniors and provided donations to local youth programs. Through their grief, they developed a love for the outdoors and traveled throughout Maine – hiking mountains with his brother Dick and sister-in-law Reine, snow shoeing or cross-country skiing in search of a yurt, camping, or simply spending a day at the ocean. Eventually they bought land on Brassua Lake with sons Pat and Joe and went north as often as they could.
Nothing brought Tim more joy than his four granddaughters and he felt like he was the luckiest man on Earth. He would beam with pride when talking about “his girls” – Jordan, Olivia, Kate, and Brooklyn. He would not simply give them cards for their birthdays or at the holidays but would hand write detailed letters to let them know how proud he was of each one, providing words of advice and encouragement. The love they have for “Grampy” in return is immeasurable, knowing he will always be by their sides.
Tim was blessed to have a large and loving family, and wide circle of friends and neighbors. He would often share fond childhood memories of his parents and siblings.Known to many as “a legend” he has been passing down these stories to the younger generations for years. Often his nieces and nephews (and their children) would stop in at Dyer Road for a visit, for words of wisdom, to share some news, or just to catch up.
He looked forward to family reunions, celebrations, and the holidays (especially St. Patrick’s Day), surrounded by those he loved. In his words, “family and friends meaneverything to me.”
He is survived by his son Patrick and his wife Laura of Lewiston; his sister Theresa Deflumere of Georgia; his brother Richard Mynahan and his wife Reine of Lewiston; and granddaughters Jordan, Olivia, Katherine, and Brooklyn. He is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews and over 25 great nieces and nephews (and their families) – all of whom he loved very much. In addition to his parents and wife Bernadette of 53 years,
Tim is predeceased by sons Timothy and Joseph, his brother John and his wife Rena, his sister Patricia and her husband Donald (Sullivan), brother-in-law Robert Deflumere, nephew Scott Sullivan, and great-great niece Caelan.
