AUTO RACING
Max Verstappen split the Ferrari front row of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the start to snatch the lead of the Mexico City Grand Prix by the first corner, then drove off to his record 16th victory of the season on Sunday.
Red Bull’s three-time Formula One champion collected his third consecutive win at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and broke his own season victories record set last year.
The Dutch driver’s 51st career win tied Alain Prost for fourth most in F1 history. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton leads with 103.
Hamilton finished second Sunday. Leclerc was third.
HOCKEY
NAHL: Nils Forselius scored two goals and the Maine Nordiques recovered from a 3-0 first-period deficit to beat the Philadelphia Rebels, 5-3, in a North American Hockey League game in Sewell, New Jersey.
Forselius started the rally with 3:54 remaining in the first period and put the Nordiques ahead 4-3 just 36 seconds into the third.
Laurent Trepanier, Nick Ramm and Nick Romeo also scored, and Carter Richardson stopped all 22 shots he faced after relieving Thomas Heaney in the first period.
NHL: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 23 saves in his first career shutout and JJ Peterka, Casey Mittelstadt, Tyson Jost and Rasmus Dahlin scored for the Buffalo Sabres in a 4-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Buffalo, New York.
• Tom Wilson scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period and the Washington Capitals beat the visiting San Jose Sharks, 3-1.
The Sharks fell to 0-7-2 and have lost 15 straight dating back to last season.
• Jesper Bratt scored twice and added an assist, Vitek Vanecek made 31 saves, and the New Jersey Devils beat the visiting Minnesota Wild, 4-3.
FATAL INJURY: American hockey player Adam Johnson, who appeared in 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and 2020, died after his neck was cut by a skate blade during a game in England on Saturday, his team said. He was 29.
Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered the skate cut during the second period of the Elite Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
BASKETBALL
NBA: Nikola Jokic had 28 points and 14 rebounds to help the visiting Denver Nuggets roll past the Oklahoma City Thunder, 128-95, for their third straight win to open the season.
Michael Porter Jr. contributed 20 points and nine rebounds, and Jamal Murray added 19 points and eight assists for the Nuggets, who shot 60.2% from the field.
GOLF
LPGA: Celine Boutier closed with an 8-under 64 and then made a 6-foot birdie on the ninth extra hole to beat Atthaya Thitikul and win the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for her fourth LPGA Tour title of the year.
Thitikul birdied the 18th hole for a 68 to force a playoff at 21-under 267.
Rose Zhang, who had a one-stroke lead going into the final round, shot a 71 and finished two shots back in a tie for third with Jasmine Suwannapura (70).
COLLEGES
FOOTBALL: Oklahoma dropped four spots to No. 10, the top five teams held their places, and Kansas and Kansas State both entered The Associated Press top 25.
Georgia is No. 1 for the 20th straight week, receiving 48 of 63 first-place votes.
This is the 50th consecutive week that either Georgia or Alabama has been No. 1.
Michigan, which was off Saturday, received nine first-place votes. No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Florida State each received three first-place votes.
SOCCER
U.S. WOMEN: Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw = scored their first international goals, and the United States defeated Colombia 3-0 in San Diego.
Lindsey Horan added a goal for the United States in the second of two exhibition matches against Colombia. The teams played to a scoreless draw on Thursday in Utah.
ENGLAND: Erling Haaland scored twice and set up another goal as Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League to again showcase the gap between the teams.
Defending champion City put in a dominant performance at Old Trafford in the 191st Manchester derby to add to the growing pressure on United Manager Erik ten Hag. It was United’s seventh loss of the season in all competitions.
City moved within two points of Tottenham at the top of the standings.
• Mohamed Salah scored his 10th goal of the season as Liverpool climbed back within three points of first place by beating Nottingham Forest, 3-0.
• Aston Villa maintained its strong start to the season with a dominating 3-1 victory a home against Luton.
The win was Villa’s fifth in six league games and leaves the club four points behind Tottenham.
HORSE RACING
BREEDERS CUP: Kentucky Derby winner Mage won’t run in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, his trainer said.
Mage had yet to travel to California for the world championships next weekend at Santa Anita.
“He presented a feverish state this morning and we have noticed symptoms of loss (of) appetite,” trainer Gustavo Delgado posted on social media.
