REGION — Oxford Hills finds itself at the edges of violence in the aftermath of the fatal shootings in Lewiston on Wednesday night. The shootings, taking place at a bowling alley and restaurant, have resulted in 18 people dead and more than a dozen wounded.
Although the suspected gunman, Robert R. Card of Bowdoin, is not currently presumed to be in the Oxford county region, Maine School Administrative District 17 confirmed to the Advertiser Democrat that all schools are closed for today.
“The decision to cancel school today was not taken lightly; ensuring the safety of our students and staff is always the most important priority,” Superintendent Heather Manchester wrote in a letter sent to all parents of Oxford Hills students. “It is also important to remember that our local law enforcement is participating in the ongoing situation, and are likely unable to respond as quickly as they might like during this time to local events here in the district.”
The letter included resources for parents to use when discussing the tragedy with their children. The district is making arrangements for counselors to be available for students to talk with when schools reopen.
Manchester said the district’s executive team continues to operate according to its emergency protocols. She is participating in a statewide conference call with other Maine superintendents late this afternoon. After that time she will release updated details about SAD 17’s response.
Paris Police Chief Michael Dailey reported that his department has placed extra police officers on duty.
Police vehicles could be seen speeding eastward along Routes 26 and 121 towards Lewiston at different times following the shooting, which began to unfold just before 7 p.m. last night.
Two officers from Norway Police Department responded to Lewiston to assist while other monitored Stephens Memorial Hospital and increased patrols. “We are staying vigilant,” said Chief Jeff Campbell.
According to Oxford Police Chief Rickie Jack, Oxford Casino was evacuated last night in small groups to ensure they made it safely to their vehicles. The casino remains closed today. Walmart also closed last night but reopened today. Jack said the retailer will reassess tonight depending on the status of the shooting suspect.
A number of tips were called into the Oxford PD, and as of Thursday midday all have been cleared.
Oxford County Regional Communications Center Deputy Director Nicole Newton said that rescue and law enforcement in Oxford County assisted Lewiston and area rescue squads also covered neighboring coverage areas. “We are assisting in any way we can to support our partners.”
Oxford County Chief Deputy James Urquhart confirmed that three deputies from Oxford County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Lewiston to provide mutual aid.
As public safety personnel from Lewiston’s neighboring towns were called to support emergency and response efforts, PACE Ambulance crews were dispatched to cover Mechanic Falls.
