100 Years Ago: 1923

A three hour snowstorm which started in Waterville around 8 pm developed into an embryonic storm by 11 pm Thursday night. It was the first storm of the year.

50 Years Ago: 1973

A state award was presented to Bates College last night in a ceremony at Colby College in Waterville. Gov. Curtis presented the award at the event which is sponsored annually by the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities to honor individuals, and organizations which have made distinctive contributions to the cultural life of Maine. This year’s reception was held in the new Colby College Art and Museum and the evenings program followed in the Roberts Union.

25 Years Ago: 1998

For John Glenn, the time to float merrily in space is gone, but so are the most painful effects of readjustment to Earth’s gravity, he said on Sunday. “I didn’t feel so hot on Sunday,” Glenn acknowledged in his first news conference since the Saturday landing in the space shuttle Discovery. “You don’t know when you come back whether you are going to be so incapacitated and being taken care of.”
