Danny S. Wing
PERU – Danny S. Wing passed away at his home during the early morning hours on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2023.
He was born in Woodsville, NH on Jan. 24, 1950 to Donald Wing and Kay (Cooper) Phillips. He grew up in Canton, Maine being raised by Richard and Jane McCollister from the time he was a young boy. He attended Canton Elementary School and later graduated from Dixfield High School and The University of Maine at Orono. He then proudly served our country in the US Navy. He stayed in contact with many of his old shipmates and had even visited his old ship the USS Little Rock while visiting his son at Fort Drum, NY a couple of years ago.
As fate would have it though, while working on a horse farm in New York after being honorably discharged he met a girl from across the river at home, Mary Lou Dolloff, who was also working there. They soon married and had their children, Angela, Christine, and Jason, after returning back home to Maine where they would raise their family and watch it grow. Danny was a true family man and the pride he had for each and everyone of us showed in that big grin that he so often wore.
Danny worked for many years as a millwright in the Stowell MacGregor mill in Dixfield and then for the paper mill in Rumford until his retirement. He had a feeling of commitment to his community and served as a Selectman for the Town of Peru, a school board director for the Town of Peru and then SAD#21. He was currently serving as a director for The Whitney Brookside Homes based out of Canton.
He loved to visit his family in North Carolina throughout the years and enjoyed spending time with them and hosting them here in Maine at his camp in Eustis along with so many other family and friends he had met. He and Mary Lou volunteered each week as Trail Magic host for hikers on the Appalachian Trail for hikers making their way from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Katahdin here in Maine.
He was also part of a group of hunters that share hunting tales and trips each year. This year it was his own Moose Hunt where a 799 lb bull went down and we are sure the stories will continue to be told through his friends, son-in-law and grandsons for years about that trip as well as all the others they shared throughout the years. He was a true Maine outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and even more so the fishing tales that would accompany those trips.
Danny was predeceased by his daughter, Christine Wing-Sterry; his parents Donald Wing, Kay Phillips and Richard McCollister Sr.; granddaughter Rebecca Cushman; and a sister Frances Wing.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Dolloff) Wing; daughter, Angela and her husband Robert Cushman Jr., son, Jason and his wife Amanda Wing; his grandchildren, John Lyle Calden II (his wife Ashley and their children Carter, Mason and Stella) Lauren Bradley (her husband James and their daughters Lydia and Madison), Stephanie Dodge (her husband Casey and son Lawson), Michaela Ryerson-Wing, Tyler Sterry, Alyssa Sterry (son Remington), Valarie Wing and Vanessa Wing; his mother and father-in-law Patricia and Richard Dolloff; along with his extended Dolloff and Wing family. He is also survived by his mother, Jane McCollister; his siblings, Albert Wing (Rolande), Alan Wing, Linda Goyette (Bob), Vicki Gagne (Richard), Cathy Hubbard (John), Hazel Stevens (Brad) and Gertrude Wing, Ben McCollister; and his step mother Grace Wing.
