The Central Maine Community College women’s soccer team struck first, but a second-half surge by University of Cincinnati-Clermont sent the Mustangs to a 3-1 loss in the opening game of the USCAA Division II national championship tournament Friday in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.

Natalie Tracy scored in the 23rd minute to give the top-seeded Mustangs the lead, which stuck at halftime. The fifth-seeded Cougars then scored two goals in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half to turn the tables for a 2-1 lead.

Maria Bates’ goal three minutes after halftime tied the game, and Alexis Taylor gave the Cougars the lead 8:11 into the second half. Taylor then assisted on Kerianna White’s goal with just over 20 minutes to play to give Cincinnati-Clermont some breathing room.

Natalie Wilson stopped three of the Mustangs’ four shots on goal to earn the win for the Cougars.

Emma Knowles made 10 saves in goal for CMCC, which faces No. 4 Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. to try and stay alive in Pool A. Penn State Mont Alto will play Cincinnati-Clermont on Sunday, and CMCC needs a win Saturday and a Penn State Mont Alto win Sunday — to go along with the best goal differential in Pool A — to advance to the championship game Monday.

The Central Maine CC men’s team, the No. 4 seed in the Division II tournament, opens its pool play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against fifth-seeded Five Towns College, which lost 3-1 to No. 1 Johnson & Wales-Charlotte on Friday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES 59, PLATTSBURGH ST. 49: Morgan Kennedy and Danielle Adams each dropped in 16 points as the Bobcats (2-0) pulled away from the Cardinals in Plattsburgh, New York.

Elsa Daulerio added eight points for Bates, which outscored Plattsburgh State 15-7 in the third quarter to take control after holding a 31-30 lead at halftime.

Imani Walcott led the Cardinals with 16 points of her own.

NICHOLS 93, UMF 88: The Beavers (1-4) jumped ahead by double digits in the first quarter, lost that lead, then tried to rally to get it back in a loss to the Bison in Farmington.

UMaine-Farmington took a 27-14 lead into the second quarter, but Nichols responded by outscoring the Beavers 61-37 over the next two periods.

Jessica Dow and Ruby McMinis tied for the game high with 27 points apiece for UMaine-Farmington. Sarah Poli added 16 points and 18 rebounds, and Grace Dwyer also scored 16 points.

Abrianna Vazquez and Kiera Fernandes each scored 20 points for Nichols.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
MAINE 80, PRESBYTERIAN 66: Peter Filipovity scored a career-high 19 points while missing only one shot, and Maine improved to 2-0 on a four-game Florida trip with a 80-66 win Friday afternoon against previously undefeated Presbyterian in Jacksonville, Florida.

Filipovity was 7 of 8 from the field and 5 for 5 from the free-throw line. Maine shot 54.3 percent overall and 53.8 percent (7 for 13) from 3-point range. The Black Bears also made 23 of 26 free throws.

Kellen Tynes added 18 points and AJ Lopez had 17 for the Black Bears (3-2), who took the lead midway through the first half and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Jonah Pierce paced the Blue Hose (4-1) with 16 points.

MEN’S HOCKEY
BOSTON U. 3, MAINE 2: Ryan Greene and Tom Willander scored power-play goals in the second period, lifting eighth-ranked Boston University to a 3-2 win over ninth-ranked Maine in a Hockey East game Friday night in Boston.

Thomas Freel got both Maine goals, including the opener just 14 seconds into the game. Macklin Celebrini tied it with a power-play goal at 1:55.

Victor Ostman made 26 saves for the Black Bears (6-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 Hockey East). BU is 7-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Hockey East.
