DALLAS — Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller turned himself in to police in a Dallas suburb on Thursday after he was charged in a warrant with domestic violence against the mother of his children, who is pregnant, police said.
Dallas police confirmed that the 34-year-old Miller surrendered to police in the suburb of Glenn Heights to face a charge of third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman, which is punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The alleged assault occurred on Wednesday, according to a police affidavit in which officers wrote that Miller twice put his hands on the neck of the woman, pulled out a chunk of her hair and threw her onto a couch. The woman was treated for minor injuries, including bruising on her neck, police said.
Miller did not return a text message from The Associated Press seeking comment.
The woman and Miller have been in a relationship for seven years and have children together, police wrote in an affidavit supporting the arrest warrant.
According to the document, police were called Wednesday to the couple’s apartment in Dallas after they got into an argument. Police wrote that Miller became “visibly angry” when the woman went into the office in the apartment and slammed the door behind her.
Miller then told her to “get out,” police wrote, and when she tried to collect her laptop and cellphone, Miller began pushing her. She repeatedly yelled, “Stop. I’m pregnant,” the affidavit said.
She fell into a chair after being pushed, and Miller then put one hand on her neck and held it with pressure for 3 to 5 seconds, police wrote.
According to the document, Miller then threw the woman’s laptop on the floor and stomped on it. After pulling out some of her hair and throwing her on a couch, he put both hands on her neck. She told police she recorded some of the attack and, when she threatened to call police, he left.
The woman told police she was six weeks pregnant and showed them a photograph of a positive pregnancy test and a screenshot of a text conversation with Miller in which they discussed the possible due date of the child and a doctor visit.
Miller, selected No. 2 overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2011 NFL draft, is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro selection.
Miller, who starred at Texas A&M and was a two-time first-team All-American, has played on two Super Bowl winners and was the MVP of the 2015 game with the Broncos. He won a second title in 2021 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
PATRIOTS: New England has signed kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad on Thursday and released receiver Mathew Sexton from the practice squad.
Wright, 27, is 40 for 46 in 23 games over three seasons with the Steelers, Jaguars and Chiefs. He provides the Patriots with insurance after rookie Chad Ryland, a fourth-round draft pick, missed 35-yard field goals in back-to-back games, both Patriots losses in one-score games.
BROWNS: Cleveland rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson remained in concussion protocol Thursday, making it even more likely Joe Flacco will start Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
The 38-year-old Flacco signed as a free agent with Cleveland last week as an insurance policy in case Thompson-Robinson struggled or got injured. The fifth-round pick suffered a concussion in the third quarter of last week’s loss in Denver.
Flacco didn’t dress for that game and is still on the Browns practice squad. But with Thompson-Robinson not yet cleared, Flacco appears to be in line to become the fourth QB to start in 12 games for Cleveland this season.
JETS: Aaron Rodgers fully intends to play again this season for the New York Jets and he hasn’t ruled out being back on the field for a game in a few weeks.
The quarterback has been making a remarkably quick recovery since tearing his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his debut with the Jets on Sept. 11.
Rodgers, speaking on the three-month anniversary of his surgery, said he’s not yet close to being able to play. He acknowledged he won’t be 100% healthy if he returns less than four months after surgery and added that it “wouldn’t make sense” to rush his return if the Jets (4-7) are out of the playoff hunt.
But he also left open the door for him to be back under center before his initial goal of Dec. 24 against Washington, saying he plans to ramp up his practice activities next week.
“I think anything’s possible,” Rodgers said.
CARDINALS: Arizona released veteran tight end Zach Ertz on Thursday, clearing the way for the rapidly-improving Trey McBride to assume the starting role.
The 33-year-old Ertz is a three-time Pro Bowl selection who has spent the past five games on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury. He returned from an ACL tear in 2022 and played in seven games this season with 27 catches for 187 yards and a touchdown.
Ertz spent the first 7 1/2 seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl in 2017. He was traded to the Cardinals during the 2021 season and played well, with 56 catches for 574 yards and three touchdowns in just 11 games.
