The Lewiston City Clerk’s Department is reminding all Lewiston dog owners that state law requires all dogs to be licensed if they are at least six months old. A dog’s license expires Dec. 31 of each year.

Renewal notices are being mailed out to approximately 2,000 dog owners who licensed their dogs for 2023. Residents may renew their pet’s license via the mail-in portion of the renewal notice or by visiting lewistonmaine.gov, and the tag for the new year will be mailed to the owner.

Residents may also go to the City Clerk’s Department at Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine St., from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to register their dog.

In order to be licensed, the dog must have a current rabies vaccination, and this certificate must be presented at time of licensing. If dog owners cannot locate their copy, they should contact their veterinarian’s office to request a duplicate copy of the rabies certificate.

Rabies is a serious problem in the state. Residents are urged to take the time to protect their pet against this deadly virus. If an animal is suspected of having rabies, it is quarantined. If during this time, the signs of rabies still appear, the only way to test an animal for rabies is to euthanize the animal. Dog licensing ensures rabies vaccination which protects the health of the pet as well as the health of the community, according to a news release from the City Clerk’s Department.

The Maine annual license fees is $6 for a dog that is spayed or neutered and $11 for a dog that is not altered. If applicable, the spaying/neutering certificate must be presented when licensing a dog for the first time.

Questions about licensing can be directed to the City Clerk’s Department at 207-513-3124 or cityclerkoffice@lewistonmaine.gov.

Questions about dangerous dogs, fines for harboring an unlicensed dog, Maine leash law, rabies management, dog bites, and other public safety matters should be directed to the Lewiston Animal Control Officer at the Lewiston Police Department.
