Mrs. Eva Foster Spear of Lewiston will be the soloist at the half hour recital which will precede the Thomas Mott Osbourne lecture at the mid winter meeting of the Maine Federation of Women’s Club in Lewiston Wednesday afternoon, Jan 9th.

50 Years Ago: 1974

A publicity-shy friend of Hebron Academy has given it $1.5 million, the largest single gift in the school’s 195 years, officials said.

The donor, who asked the school not to reveal his or her name, gave the money with a restriction: It must be used to underwrite faculty salaries. Even so, the gift benefits everyone at the private school, said Paul C. Domingue, assistant headmaster for finance. He said it frees up money that would have been used for salaries. Now, he said, that money can be used for programs instead.

“The effect will roll and spill down to every student in class,” he said Monday.

25 Years Ago: 1999

The artist of the month at St. Mary’s Medical Center on Campus Avenue is Dan Cake of Auburn. His intricate works on scratchboard are featured in the exhibit that will be displayed in the hospital’s lobby during January.
