Maria Greeley is Wilton’s new town manager, having started her job in mid-November of last year.

Now living in Leeds and originally from Chester County, Pennsylvania, Greeley moved to Maine with her husband, Jarad Greeley, in 2014. They have a 6-year-old daughter, Isla. The family also has a dog — a red heeler name Azula — and two cats, Porter and Ebony. She earned her bachelor of science degree in accounting in the spring of 2023.

What drew you to municipal service? I started working for a municipality in a community that I lived in. During my employment in Somerville, I realized the importance of community. Providing services to our communities is necessary and they aren’t always the easiest jobs to fulfill. I’ve met amazing and dedicated individuals along the way who serve their towns year after year. I worked and learned alongside people who became my mentors and offered their support and I learned under them. I am passionate about finding efficient solutions for making our towns run smoothly. I hope to bring forth my learnings into my work here in Wilton.

Did you work your way up through the system? I started out as a tax collector, and was privileged with the opportunity to later become the treasurer in Somerville. I started my education journey in 2019, not long after being appointed as the treasurer. I applied and was later employed by the town of Union as their treasurer. I wanted more hours and more responsibilities, which was a wonderful opportunity to grow in this position. My family and I moved out of the area, which led me to find a job at an accounting firm. I learned a lot in this position, but found myself missing working in our communities. That is when I learned about the opening for the town manager in Wilton.

Why did you choose to become a town manager? I chose to apply for the town manager position in Wilton because I missed working in our Maine communities. I understand how important every job is within a municipality, whether you are a town official, select board member or volunteer committee member. I chose to apply for the position because I am always up for a challenge, I genuinely care to listen to others, and want to give back to our local towns. I would also like to mention that I would not be here without the support that I’ve been given throughout my career so far. I was fortunate enough to build relationships with people who supported my goals and allowed me to always ask the questions. I hope to be that type of manager as I build those relationships here in Wilton.

What is your favorite part of being a town manager? My favorite part of being a town manager so far is meeting individuals in the community. Many residents and community members have stopped in to introduce themselves and provide a warm welcome. I am enjoying learning how the community works together, including departments, businesses and residents. Wilton is a special town because of community involvement. I am drawn to the resident outreach and their commitment to keeping the town a safe and enjoyable place to live and visit.

What is the worst part? Being new to the position of town manager, I don’t think I can give a sufficient answer yet. However, if I were to decide on one aspect, it would be not having enough time in the day! Time management will become one of my major focuses as I continue to transition in Wilton. I look forward to learning more about the community, working on current projects and seeing them to fruition.
