A benefit contradance for Habitat for Humanity is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at Trinity Commons in Lewiston. Music will be provided by the Mighty Cloud of Fiddlers with John McIntire teaching and calling accessible dances.
The Mighty Cloud of Fiddlers is a gathering of professional and amateur fiddlers from around Maine who play traditional jigs, reels, polkas and waltzes for the joy of making music together, for dancing, and for raising money for others in need. “We first gathered,” says founding member Greg Boardman, “in Portland back in 1986, to fundraise for Habitat for Humanity. We had about thirty of us musicians, and with the dancers we all agreed that it created a very special energy that bears repeating.” Boardman has put out the call and urges any fiddler who “catches wind of it” to come and join the fun.
John McIntire is one of Maine’s favorite contradance callers, having practiced for several decades. John found his calling, as it were, back in the early 90s. Now he calls New England contra, square, and circle dances at venues around Maine. His crisp, steady voice and clear teaching style make every dance a pleasure for novice and expert alike.
Admission to the dance is $10, with larger donations gladly accepted. Children and youth under 17 are admitted for free. Attendees are requested to wear soft-soled shoes.
Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St., Lewiston. For more information call 207-344-3106.
