LEWISTON, Jan. 10, 2024 — Jim Gauthier shovels the end of a driveway Wednesday in Lewiston. Gauthier works for a landlord and generally snow blows the driveways. Removing it by hand seems like the best option with the heavy rain that followed the snow. Gauthier grew up in Jackman Maine and recalls much heavier snowfalls in his youth. “I remember one storm where me and my brother had to jump out of a second-floor window with shovels so we could get our front door open,” Gauthier recalls. Gauthier also swears that the kids on his school bus used to have to get out and push the bus out of snowbanks, “Almost on a daily basis.” (Andree Kehn/Sun Journal) Andree Kehn/Sun Journal

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of Androscoggin County after a storm left the area Wednesday. Auburn and Lewiston were identified as cities vulnerable to flooding.

Streams continue to rise from excess runoff from today’s rainfall — from 1 to 3 inches — and overnight snow. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable, according to the NWS. It will take several hours for the water to work through local drainage systems in urban areas.

The flooding impacts is worse near the coast where high tides have backed up streams.
