Hannah Dieterich, left, Shelby Woods, center, and Katherine Slattery-Seaman fill bags with food Thursday at the Wales Town Office for the Regional School Unit 4 Community Cares Backpack Program. Dieterich is the founder of the nonprofit program that aims to provide three meals a day on weekends to about 100 children. Funding comes from public grants, but mostly from private donations. To sustain efforts, the group leverages resources from the Good Shepherd Food Bank and supplements their menu items with purchases from Sam’s Club, maximizing their buying power by following sales. Filling the bags takes a couple of hours each week, and they are actively seeking more volunteers to help. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
