PARIS — A weekend burglary at the Paris Hill post office on Tremont Street resulted in the theft of mail, keys and other equipment.

Paris Police Department Administrative Assistant Nick Gilbert confirmed the theft, saying the theft of mail and equipment was reported Sunday morning at 7:46 a.m.

The theft is still under investigation.

A frequent visitor to the Paris post office, who asked not to be identified, said one of his neighbors had a check stolen that they had written. The check, written in the amount of $50, was changed to $1,250 and cashed. That person also had money stolen from their savings account.

The individual added that he was told that a stamp machine was also stolen.

A post on social media said the theft of keys is forcing postal officials to change the locks on the post office boxes and to provide new keys for box users.

Postal officials were unavailable for comment Friday.
