Hannah Dieterich, left, Shelby Woods, center, and Katherine Slattery-Seaman fill bags with food Jan. 18 at the Wales Town Office for the Regional School Unit 4 Community Cares Backpack Program. Dieterich is the founder of the nonprofit program that aims to provide three meals a day on weekends to about 100 children. Funding comes mostly from private donations, and is supplemented with public grants. To support the program’s efforts, the group utilizes resources from the Good Shepherd Food Bank, and adds to its menu through purchases at Sam’s Club, maximizing the group’s buying power by paying close attention to sales. Chad Chaisson holds a 19-inch rainbow trout Jan. 19 as his friend, Chris, takes a photograph of the fish Chaisson has just caught at Middle Range Pond in Poland.
