PORTER — For the second time in 15 months, a catastrophic fire Monday morning has destroyed the kiln at Day Logging on Brownfield Road.

A similar fire destroyed the kiln in October 2022. That kiln was recently rebuilt and went back into production a month ago.

The kiln is used to dry firewood. According to its Facebook page, the kiln can dry 60 cords of wood at a time.

On Monday, the kiln was fully stacked with multiple cords of firewood when it somehow caught fire, said Kezar Falls Fire Chief Jeff Dutil. More than a dozen fire crews provided mutual aid and took more than four hours to get the blaze under control.

Tankers were needed to truck water to the scene, Dutil said.

The firewood was piled high in metal containers in the kiln, which was at full capacity, Dutil said. The fire was reported by a passerby at approximately 2:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal, Dutil said.

Day Logging is a family-owned business specializing in wood and timber harvesting services, lot clearing and trucking services. A major part of its business is Day’s Firewood, which supplies firewood to numerous campgrounds.
