I was shocked to read in the Jan. 20 paper that the city of Lewiston is terminating its contract with David Hediger, the director of planning and code enforcement.
I’ve known and worked with Dave on the LA Triple Crown Committee for many years and have always found him to be reliable, dedicated to his responsibilities and a man of complete integrity.
The city’s action apparently is related to the recent code enforcement incident at DaVinci’s Eatery. The city and the restaurant co-owner are in agreement that two cockroaches were found. Not an infestation, but still something to be concerned about. Especially if, as stated, the cockroaches were an ongoing issue.
Reevaluating the city’s protocol in response to these events is a good decision. Logically, this incident also calls for the restaurant to r-evaluate it’s management of the kitchen to prevent a reoccurrence. There’s always room for improvement, on both sides.
DaVinci’s has always been one of my favorite restaurants. I’m encouraged that the city took action and that the co-owner followed through with the cleaning process to assure customers that we can continue to safely enjoy the restaurant.
It is difficult to see how terminating Mr. Hediger’s employment in response to this incident will improve anything. In my opinion, it will only hurt both the city and the business.
