PARIS — Students of Vocational Region 11 Oxford Hills Tech took over Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School’s classrooms and corridors last week for the 13th Annual Tech Challenge and Awards Ceremony.

Trades demonstrations, simulation exercises and culinary samples were presented at every turn in friendly, informative and tasty competitions, which were followed by gold, silver and bronze awards for students who hit their marks after months of preparation.

Vanessa LaRue, in her second year of Culinary Arts, won bronze in the baking competition. Visitors of the challenge moving through the food choices picked up their own copies of her recipe to make themselves.

“I really wanted to do something with chocolate and strawberries,” she said of her project. “It’s a chocolate cake base, topped with strawberries and chocolate mousse inside.”

LaRue intends to continue culinary studies after she graduates, with the plan to become a private chef or a pastry chef.

Not every challenge included sweet tooth satisfaction or sounds of industrial demonstrations.

“As an English teacher, I can’t build a car or bake a cake,” said English and College Writing teacher Shellie Leger. “So I invite my Tech English students to write a poem.”

Six students in her class took the challenge, with senior Michaela Holbrook finishing with the gold. Although Holbrook is part of OHTS’ Allied Health program and will study nursing after she graduates in June, Leger said her writing talents could also take her places if she chooses.
