I write in rebuttal to Audrey Murphy (“LD 1578 would remove voting power of Maine people,” Jan. 17).

L.D. 1578 is an attempt to make it impossible for anyone not elected by a majority of U.S. citizens to assume the highest office in government. Makes perfect sense to me.

The Electoral College was contrived to allow southern states’ voters to carry more weight at the ballot box by allowing slaves to count as three-fifths a person. The truth is, we make a mockery of democracy with leaders not voted in by a majority.
