BETHEL — Maine artist and author Robert Shetterly is coming to Bethel this week.

Best known for the portraits he has painted over the past 20 years, and books published of the Americans Who Tell the Truth (americanswhotellthetruth.com) portraits – Portraits of Racial Justice and Portraits of Earth Justice, Robert also did editorial page illustrations for the Maine Times newspaper and published a collection of his etchings, Speaking Fire at Stone. Two opportunities have been scheduled to meet Shetterly and discuss his work.

A Meet the Artist Community Potluck will be at West Parish Congregational Church on Thursday evening, Feb. 1 starting at 5:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share.

On Friday, Feb. 2, BAAM at the Gem will show the movie Truth Tellers about Shetterly’s project to portray more than 260 Americans who have seen injustice and dedicated their lives to improvement. He portrays the famous and the unknown individuals who have become participants in our democracy and worked to better the environment, social justice, and civil rights.

With each portrait he conveys a quote that summarizes their passion for change. Shetterly seeks through his work to inspire the audience to become active citizens in our democracy.

The West Parish Congregational Church is at 32 Church St in Bethel. The Gem Theater is located at 48 Cross St Bethel. On Friday, Shetterly will introduce the movie at 6:30 p.m., the film will show at 6:45 and there will be an opportunity for Q&A after the film.

Tickets for the movie are “Pay What You Can” ranging in price from $0 to $35. All funds raised will benefit future BAAM programming. Purchase your tickets in advance on the Gem’s website: www.thegemtheater.com. Bethel Area Arts and Music (BAAM) is a 501©3 nonprofit.
