LEWISTON — Walgreens at 315 Main St. will close Feb. 27, and the company will not be building a new store at 297 Main St. as reported last year.
The closure of the store, which is across from Central Maine Medical Center, will likely have an impact on the neighborhood, which saw the closure of Bedard Pharmacy’s 61 College St. location in November 2022.
The Sun Journal contacted Walgreens on Jan. 17 after hearing about a possible closure. In an email, a spokesperson wrote, “We have no announcements at this time.”
On Wednesday morning, the company confirmed the store closure. No reason was given.
In October, the company closed its store at 61 Union St. in Auburn as part of a national plan to reduce its footprint.
Lewiston’s planning department approved a building permit last year for a $1.1 million project by the company on a vacant lot adjacent to the current store location. Construction never got underway.
Earlier this year, Forbes reported that Walgreens, the largest pharmacy chain in the nation, announced it would close 150 stores and reduce operating hours at an additional 1,100 stores.
