TURNER — The Maine Department of Transportation is providing information and collecting public comment on its plan to install a traffic signal and turning lanes at the intersection of Route 4 and Weston Road.
The department is using a virtual public meeting, which it started using during the pandemic and has proven to be effective in communicating with the public, Senior Project Manager Rhobe Moulton said. The information and comments will continue through Feb. 12.
The DOT plans to install traffic signals in all four directions of the intersection and construct two left-turn lanes, one from Route 4 onto Weston Road and another from Route 4 onto the entrance of Northland Plaza shopping center.
The intersection has one of the highest injury rates across the state, according to information in the virtual meeting. The renovations are to address those safety issues.
Much of the public comment submitted so far is centered around the safety of the Route 4 corridor and what the state is doing to improve it, according Moulton.
Some people on social media complained about speeding and cellphone use while driving along Route 4, and others discussed other intersections along the highway they felt should be subject to similar renovations to address safety concerns. Some said they just wanted to see the project happen.
The project is scheduled to start this spring or summer and end in the spring or summer of 2025, according to information in the meeting.
