The Canton Historical Society is set to host a free genealogy workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at 25 Turner St. in Canton.

Those who attend can learn the basics: how to search for family roots; locate birth, death and marriage certificates of relatives; and how to create and store a family tree.

The society hopes the workshop will provide the attendees an opportunity to share their genealogy knowledge and enthusiasm, both during the workshop and in the future, according to a news release from the society.

The workshop will be led by Jane Adams and Sam Howes. Adams has been researching her family tree for over a decade. During this time, she has found a number of productive avenues. She will share her experiences and help take accumulated scribbled-down notes and put them into a more organized and accessible format. She will also provide information on how to avoid research “roadblocks” and “brick walls.”

Howes, the society’s archivist, also is employed as the archivist by Bates College and worked previously for the Maine State Archives. Howes will share his vast experience in genealogy research and familiarize attendees with some of the lesser-known resources. Howes’ ancestors lived in Maine, so he is particularly knowledgeable about this area.

Advance registration is requested by emailing cantonmehistorical@gmail.com. Doors open at 9:45 a.m. The venue is handicap accessible.

Those unable to attend but would like individualized assistance are urged to email that address.
