Florence (Palmer) Butler
FAWNSKIN, Calif. – Florence died Dec. 30, 2023 at the age of 98, surrounded by adoring family.
Flo was born and raised in Wales. She was the first woman to graduate in the state of Maine with a degree in chemistry from UMaine Orono. Flo received a master’s in chemistry at Smith and went on to a long career as a research chemist with several patents in her name.
Predeceased by husband, John, Flo is survived by children, David, Robin, and Nancy; and three grandchildren.
Flo was the consummate “renaissance woman”; she made clothing and furniture, fixed broken things, built house additions, and did all the work to install three backyard swimming pools. She was an avid birder. After she moved away, Flo loved returning to Maine to bird and visit many family members.
