Robert J. Maxwell
AUBURN – Robert J. Maxwell passed away Jan. 13, 2024, at the Auburn Hospice House after a long illness.
Robert was born in Newark, N.J. in 1933 to Hugh and Sarah (Kinsella) Maxwell and raised in Harrison, N.J. with his six brothers and sisters. He attended Holy Cross and St. Cecilia’s schools. Robert served in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957 and was stationed in England and Tripoli as well as stateside locations.
When his term of service was completed, Robert enrolled at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. on the G.I. Bill, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Kathleen, while on retreat. They married in 1962 and raised three children in the Syracuse, N.Y. area. Kathleen predeceased Robert in September 2019.
Profoundly influenced by his devout Catholicism and concern for others, Robert earned a master’s degree in social work from Syracuse University. He spent most of his career as a psychiatric counselor at Community General Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. where he worked for 30 years.
Robert will forever be remembered by his loving family as selfless and sacrificing, the very model of a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Kramer, and her husband, Richard, of Lewiston, son, Robert, and his wife, Paula, of Weymouth, Mass., son, David, and his wife, Raina, of Yarmouth; his three grandchildren, Clare Kramer and Ella and Adam Maxwell; his sister, Suzanne Maxwell, of Cortland, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 21, at St. Philip Church, 2365 Turner Rd., Auburn. Interment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Lewiston.
