AUBURN — Five people safely escaped their burning apartment building at 269 Turner St. early Friday morning

According to Auburn Fire Investigator David O’Connell, the call came in at 4:12 a.m. When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming from the second-floor porch, where the fire was suspected to have started, he said.

Although the cause has yet to be determined, O’Connell said it does not look suspicious.

The building is at the corner of Turner and Vernon streets.

Auburn firefighters were assisted by the Lewiston Fire Department and together “brought the fire under control, preventing extension into the third residential unit despite the heavy volume of fire and cold temperatures,” according to a statement released by the city.

The statement said all five residents — three adults and two children — got out safely and were being assisted by the American Red Cross. Smoke detectors were credited with alerting occupants. No injuries were reported. One of the units was unoccupied.

Durham, Poland, Oxford, Mechanic Falls and New Gloucester fire departments and United Ambulance Service provided Auburn station coverage and/or covered other emergencies in the city. Communications staff and other city departments also assisted.
