I write in response to a guest column by Dr. Joe Anderson (“Public health response to gun violence demands reflection, bold action,” Feb. 11).

The Lewiston mass shooting is of concern to everyone, and we all hope and pray there is never a repeat. There were safeguards in place, which could have prevented this horrific event, but the ball was dropped.

“Blame the gun.”

We in Maine do not have nearly enough mental heath care capability. One reason might be the “certificate of need” rule. People should look this up if need be. The medical profession is responsible for that, but …

A convicted felon in possession of a firearm is to be imprisoned by federal law, but that is often the first thing to be plea bargained away.

“Blame the gun.”

A gram of fentanyl could possibly cause 500 deaths, so what do we do about that?

Blaming firearms and all the related components is putting heads in the sand and missing the whole issue, concentrating on the method instead of the “Why did this person do this?”

I ask people to look at the whole picture and stop blaming the gun.
