NORWAY – Dr. John Gilman Waite, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Friday Feb. 8, 2024. He was born on May 13, 1929 in Troy, N.H. to the late John G. Waite Sr. and Grace (Martin) Waite.
John attended local schools in Troy, N.H. and graduated in 1947 as his senior class valedictorian. He then voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a medic during the Korean War and was stationed in Massachusetts.
After an honorable discharge, John attended the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Ill. There, he met the love of his life, Beatriz Heinrich, whom he married in Chicago immediately after graduation, then drove their Hudson Jet east to Norway to open a practice, settle down, and raise their large family.
John was highly regarded as a successful chiropractor and healer in the Oxford Hills, spanning his 40 year career. He was an accomplished deer hunter, fly fisherman, archer, marksman, and steward of nature. John was a Master Gardener growing vegetables, fruit trees, berry bushes, and flowers. His large hungry family, neighbors, friends, and patients were all grateful recipients of his fresh produce.
He is survived by daughters Rene Raymunt (James) of Milton, Del., Debra Tessitore (Robert) of Carver, Mass., and Denise Downey of Groton, Mass., sons Mark Waite (Ann) of Falmouth, Derek Waite (Barbara) of West Roxbury, Mass., and Steven Waite of Carapdapan, Philippines. John was also the proud grandfather to 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 66 years, Beatriz Waite.
The family plans a graveside memorial service in May at the Norway Center Cemetery where he will be reunited with Beatriz. The family is grateful to John’s caretaker Cynthia Pratt for her years of dedicated and compassionate care.
