Leta Ann Richards

AUBURN – Leta Ann Richards, affectionately known as “Leta” or “La” to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Born on March 15, 1941, in Dry Mills, Leta will be remembered as a loving woman with a legendary sense of humor, exceptional cooking skills, and a warm smile that could light up any room.

Throughout her life, Leta pursued her creative passions, spending cherished moments painting and crafting with friends. She leaves behind a legacy of beautiful artwork treasured by many. Leta’s journey included marriage to Joe West, with whom she raised three children, Arlo, Jo-Ann, and Deborah. Following her divorce, she married Gilbert Richards and relocated to Auburn, where they owned and operated Gilly’s Variety, a beloved local establishment known for its delicious meals and warm hospitality.

Leta was a caring hardworking individual who dedicated herself to various roles, including work as a CNA, beautician, and waitress at establishments such as Jimmy’s Diner and Sims Restaurant. She took great joy in attending musical events to support her son Arlo’s performances throughout Lewiston/Auburn.

Preceded in death by her parents, Arlo and Kathleen Copp; husband, Gilbert; sister, Jeanette; and daughters Jo-Ann and Deborah.

Leta is survived by her siblings, David, Dennis (Connie), Ron, Eileen, Jeanie (Butch); her son, Arlo (Yvonne); grandchildren Austin (Cara), Keith (Dawn), Troy, Nicholas, Christian, and Cheryl; as well as great-grandchildren Anthony, Lilli, Oly, Tianna, and Keyanna. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and special loved ones, including her nephew, Marcel Lemelin; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Chandler.

A celebration of life will be held at Pinette Dillingham and Lynch funeral home, 305 Alfred A Plourde Pkwy, Lewiston, on Feb. 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Leta’s memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives she touched with her kindness, humor, and unwavering love. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
