BETHEL — Bethel Recreation Department winter programs are in full swing and have many kids playing basketball, getting out skiing and enjoying the ice rink.

Crescent Park third graders borrowed skates and helmets from Mahoosuc Kids Association to skate on the Bethel Recreation Department ice rink at the former Ethel Bisbee School. Half of the kids had not skated before said teacher Heidi Bullen. Collin Clough and Adam Ferrier pushed each other around on the ice. Rose Lincoln/Bethel Citizen

Please note that the Telstar after school ski program runs until March 14 and there are still limited spots available. Telstar students can still register for this program and enjoy a few more trips to Mt. Abram on Thursdays and Fridays after school, cording to Recreation Director Nate Crooker.

For adults, it has extended its pick-up indoor soccer offering until Sunday, March 10. Play begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Telstar gym on Sunday afternoons. All experience and skill levels are welcome, ages 15+.

It’s been a challenging weather winter for the ice rink, noted Crooker, but the Rec. will keep it going as long as volunteers are available to help maintain it and the weather allows. If you enjoy the rink but haven’t had a chance to help out with the maintenance yet, please consider following the “Bethel Community Ice Rink” page on Facebook to find a time when you can pitch in.

Looking ahead, registration for softball, baseball and T-ball will be opening soon. It is a great help to volunteer organizers if you register as soon as possible. Registration for baseball players up to age 12 and softball players up to age 14 must be done by March 22 in order to secure a roster spot.

After this time, kids will be waitlisted and only placed if space is available. Please check out the Bethel Recreation Facebook page for updates on this, as well as some select pre-season indoor clinic opportunities in March.

Bethel Recreation is always in need of volunteer coaches, especially for rookie leagues and T-ball. Additionally, it could use paid baseball and softball umpires for the minors levels. Baseball and softball fans of all ages are encouraged to consider getting involved, even if you don’t have children directly participating.

Umpires do not have to be certified and the Rec emphasizes an atmosphere of appreciation for those able to help. Please contact recreation@bethelmaine.org with any interest in volunteering.

Further down the road it will be offering a summer track and field program, and hope to include participation in some track meets this year. More volunteers are needed to help make this happen, so again, please reach out with interest in helping out.

Bethel Rec. is very open to helping facilitate additional programs that volunteers want to offer. If you’d like to see any new opportunities available, get in touch.
