LEWISTON — Wil Masterson’s first goal of the new season was a big one, sending host Bates College past Emerson College, 16-15 in overtime, in the Bobcats’ men’s lacrosse season opener at Garcelon Field on Wednesday.

The Bobcats (1-0) looked in command at halftime, leading the Lions (1-2) 13-5. But Emerson outscored Bates 10-2 in the second half, capped by Grady Behrhorst’s goal with six seconds left in the fourth quarter, to send the game to overtime. Masterson scored with 2:58 left in the extra session.

Gray Doyle led Bates with a hat trick, while Ben Miller, Javi Werner, Riley McClure and Alex Horowitz all tallied two goals. Lowell Hairston, Jake Johnson, Jake Anastas and TJ Underhill matched Masterson with one goal each. Doyle also dished out six assists.

Jack Burns and Nicholas Fulgione each scored five goals for Emerson.

Andrew Toland tallied nine saves for Bates. Malcolm McGrath turned away 21 of 37 shots for Emerson.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
STEVENS 10, BATES 8: The No. 17 nationally ranked Ducks (1-0) outscored the Beavers (0-1) by a 5-2 margin in the third quarter to rally from a one-goal halftime deficit and win both teams’ season opener in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Caroline Keating scored a game-high four goals for Bates, which took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Lauren Wong scored two goals, Emma Austin and Laci Raveis each tallied one and Sadie O’Neil provided two assists.

Emily Leiby, Maddie Hogan, Stefanie Sellitto and Rebecca Guerra all scored two goals for Stevens.

Avery Lehman made nine saves for the Bobcats and Felicity Heilferty stopped eight shots for the Ducks.
