Author David Florig

NORWAY —Maine author David S. Florig will present an author talk on his debut historical novel, The Stones of Ailsa Craig, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 (snow date, Tuesday, March 26) at 6:30 p.m.

The Stones of Ailsa Craig is an homage to Belfast, Maine, the glorious Maine coast, and the ancient Scottish sport of curling. Set in present-day Belfast, Maine, and 1880s Scotland, the novel is a sometimes-dark look into one man’s loss, loneliness, obsession, and quest for vengeance. Rich in curling and Maine history, it was a 2023 Finalist for the American Writing Awards, nominated for a Maine Literary Award, the Eric Hoffer Award, and the Indies Today Award. The novel was called a ‘crowning achievement’ by The Feathered Quill and featured on News Center Maine’s 207 and Maine Public Radio’s Maine Calling.

David grew up and lived in South Jersey before retiring to Maine. Adopted by Charles and Marjorie Florig, he has seen just a single picture of his birth mother. Subconsciously, that picture may have inspired The Stones of Ailsa Craig. For years, David practiced law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Following his legal career, he served as the Executive Director of two nonprofits – Court Appointed Special Advocates of Burlington County (New Jersey) and the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children. WePAC recruited and trained volunteers to open shuttered elementary school libraries in Philadelphia. For his work on behalf of Philadelphia’s children, he was honored as one of the inaugural GameChangers by KYW Newsradio in celebration of Black History Month.

Most recently, Florig organized and led a group of ninety Maine authors as Maine Authors for Lewiston. Between November 25 and December 16, the group held ten book sales/signings in public libraries around the state to raise money to support victims and families of the tragic events in Lewiston on October 25. Each author donated all or a portion of their proceeds to charities in Lewiston. The group raised more than $6,000.00 at the events.

David Florig is a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance and a member and past president of the Pine Tree Curling Club in Portland. He lives in Ocean Park, Maine with his wife of thirty-five years, Nancy, and their ill-mannered rescue dog, Molly Malone.

This free event will include readings, a 60-million-year-old Scottish granite curling stone, a Q&A, and a book signing. Purchase books at the event for $19.99. Norway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street, Norway, Maine. For more information, call 207-743-5309 or visit www.norwaymemoriallibrary.org.
