A big second inning sent Bates on its way to a season-opening 9-5 baseball win over host Averett University on Thursday.

Jack Margiloff’s two-run single was the catalyst for the Bobcats’ (1-0) five-run top of the second, which broke a 1-1 tie. Margiloff later stole second and scored a run of his own in the frame.

Ben Genser also collected two RBIs, Cheverus grad Chris Cimino led Bates with three hits and Brandon Biggane tallied two.

Christopher McGrail earned the win on the mound, tossing an inning in relief of starter Luke Linnehan, who lasted 3 1/3 innings. Linnehan struck out two batters and McGrail struck out one.

South Portland grad Nolan Hobbs recorded five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Jack Potash pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.

The Bobcats racked up 11 hits against Cougars pitchers, including four against starter Halen Lowman and seven against reliever Garrett Arner.

Averett drew within 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run frame highlighted by Kevin Zischke’s two-run home run.

Bates scored two runs in the top of the ninth for some breathing room.
