Three city councilors will host a neighborhood meeting Wednesday at 7 pm at Pettingill School on the proposed extension of Veteran Memorial Bridge that would create an overpass for traffic to travel over Main Street. Traffic would be able to travel directly from Russell Street to the bridge and from the bridge to Russell Street without having to stop at any traffic lights.
Public Works Director Chris Branch will attend the meeting to explain the project.
Councilors James Carignan, Scott Lynch and Frank Kelly are holding the meeting to hear constituents concerns before a March 1st meeting Maine Department of Transportation meeting on the project to be held in the City Building. A similar meeting is planned for March 2nd. in Auburn because the same type of overpass would span Center Street.
Carignan, who is dean of Bates College, has been an outspoken opponent of the project, saying it will increase traffic flow on Russell Street, which borders the college, and ruin the quality of life in nearby neighborhoods.
