American and Canadian snowshoers headed for home Sunday night following a weekend which saw snowshoe races run indoors and a stiff wind nearly whipped flags and banners from staffs. The difficult conditions under which officials of the 50th anniversary of the International Snowshoe Congress had to function failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the large numbers of participants. The Saturday afternoon banquet saw the marchers face into a wind, which gave the 23 degree temperature a very low chill factor.

The Sunday afternoon banquet and trophy presentation at the Memorial Armory closed out the numerous events which started last Friday with the coronation of the congress queen.

Mayor John C. Orestis presented a key to the city Saturday morning to Gerald Nadon, of Ottawa, Ontario, president of the Canadian Snowshoe Union.

Maple sugar and maple taffy hardened on fresh snow was available all day at the Montagnard Club parking lot on Lisbon Street which served as convention headquarters.

The Maine Sugar House operated by the Maine Maple Producers Association was stationed in the parking lot and Orlando Small, a maple producer from Farmington, was on hand making the taffy. He brought along his own snow from Farmington.

The fun-filled weekend got underway with a coronation ball along with the coronation of Snowshoe Queen Pauline Rancourt of Lewiston. Members of her court were princesses Cecile Salvas of Biddeford, Dorothy Lemire, of Manchester, N.H., Ida Ouellette of Lewiston and Pat Zubiate of Lewiston.
