FARMINGTON — Organizers decided Wednesday, Feb. 28, to cancel the sled dog races scheduled for this weekend.
The races were to have been held Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, starting at 10 a.m. each day in the fields along Front Street.
The snow forecast for Friday, Feb. 23, was much lighter than expected. Warm temperatures and rain this week further impacted the snow that was in the fields.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28, organizer Jake Turner said it is supposed to rain and be in the 50s this weekend.
“They canceled the Can-Am,” his mom, Joy Turner said in conveying the information.
The Can-Am races in Fort Kent were to have started Friday, March 1, and run throughout the weekend but were called off Monday. The longest sled dog race in the eastern United States, the Can-Am races draw thousands to northern Maine.
The Farmington races have had to be canceled numerous times over the last decade because of lack of snow.
“Another year down the drain,” Joy Turner added.
