PARIS — Superintendent Heather Manchester told directors of the Oxford Hills School District on Monday that new outdoor learning pavilions are in use at Guy E. Rowe School in Norway and Paris Elementary School.

The structures will support experiential education classes as part of a districtwide initiative to establish outdoor classrooms, gardens and nature trails at each of Maine School Administrative District 17’s eight schools, including Harrison, Hebron, Otisfield, Oxford, Waterford and West Paris.

Sarah Timm, the district’s outdoor learning coach, works with elementary educators to incorporate outdoor curriculum in classroom units for all courses.

Manchester said Timm was a featured speaker at a state-sponsored Celebration of Outdoor Learning last week at the Hall of Flags in the State House in Augusta.

The superintendent also announced that district staff are participating in Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce’s human resources seminar series led by Susan Hanley and Ashley Herrick of Community Concepts Inc. Seminars will take place at Stephens Memorial Hospital’s Ripley Medical Building conference room in Norway.

Manchester also announced that students will be surveyed this month about school experiences using Panorama, the district’s communications platform for social-emotional learning.

The board approved a second reading of the rewritten Communicable/Infectious Diseases Policy, outlining protocols for faculty and health services staff in cases of illness. It has not been revised since 2000.

Also approved was the second reading of the Graduation Requirements Policy. The state requires 16 credits for high school graduation. Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School seniors have long had to earn 24 credits.

The revised policy reduces the number of credits to 21, revises requirements for graduation from special education program and includes minor adjustments to what courses are required for graduation.

In other business, directors: approved a field trip to the Boston Museum of Science for Paris Elementary School fifth graders on May 24, accepted an anonymous $1,000 donation to help fund the trip, and accepted a $1,584 donation from Oxford County Chrysler Dodge Jeep of South Paris to purchase ski ponchos for the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School alpine ski team.
