Rent relief is an emergency need in Maine. Families who have arrived in Maine eager to contribute, and families who have been building our communities for generations, are all struggling to pay the rent.

This situation has real impacts on the stability of families and communities. I know families who have decided to move to other states or moved from one town to another because their income was insufficient to pay the rent. I also know many people who need help finding a landlord who will accept payment from General Assistance. Landlords fear that when families start paying themselves, they will have difficulty paying the rent.

Imagine what life in Maine could be like if no one had to worry about having a safe place to call home. Mainers would be relieved of a great deal of stress, which would improve physical and mental health. They would have more money to invest in good food and self-improvement. They would have hope for tomorrow.

Those responsible for fighting for us need to make strong decisions in favor of all Mainers, including people with low incomes. Maine will boast healthy and productive people for generations if we invest now to house everyone.
