The Kennebec Land Trust has announced the dates and speakers for its annual conservation lecture series.

This year’s program is Maine Mammals and Their Habitats (see tklt.org/lyceum). KLT’s lecture series is modeled after the early New England lyceums that began in 1826 in Massachusetts and continued for many years, hosting lectures, debates, and concerts for public audiences. KLT’s 2024 lyceum is supported by The Helen and George Ladd Family and sponsored by the Maine Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. All programs are free and open to the public.

KLT’s 2024 Lyceum will take place at the Winthrop High School Performing Arts Center, 212 Rambler Way in Winthrop.

“Monitoring Maine’s Fisher and Marten Populations” — with Shevenell Webb, wildlife biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife — is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14.

Webb will review what is known about fisher and marten, how MDIFW is gathering information to strengthen the management of these species, and what the early results of MDIFW’s camera studies show.

“Deer in Maine, Past to Present” — with Nathan Bieber, wildlife biologist with MDIFW — will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21.

Bieber will talk about the history of deer populations in Maine from pre-colonial times to the present, the status of white-tailed deer in Maine, and the data supporting the management of white-tailed deer.

“Bats of Maine” — with Cory Stearns, small mammal biologist with MDIFW — is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28.

Stearns will discuss bat biology, MDIFW’s bat monitoring project, the status of Maine’s eight bat species, and what landowners can do to benefit bats.

KLT also will offer two related fall field workshops. “Improving Wildlife Habitat in Your Backyard” will be led by MDIFW’s Private Lands Wildlife Biologist Joe Roy, while “Resolving Conflicts with Beaver” will be led by USDA wildlife biologist Ben Nugent.
