AUBURN — The best way for the Twin City Thunder to keep their playoff hopes alive was to beat the team they’re chasing for the final postseason berth in the USPHL NCDC New England Division.

The Northern Cyclones had other ideas.

The Thunder closed out their home schedule with a 4-0 loss to the Cyclones on Saturday at Norway Savings Bank Arena. That sets up a must-win game for the Thunder on Sunday at the Cyclones’ home rink in Hudson, New Hampshire.

Twin City (16-28-3-1, 36 points) sits five points behind the Cyclones (16-24-6-3, 41 points) for fifth place in the division. The fourth- and fifth-place teams in the division will match up in a play-in game to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

The Thunder have just four games remaining, starting with Sunday’s 1 p.m. game at the Cyclones, followed by three games next weekend at the fourth-place Junior Bruins.

Saturday’s home finale for the Thunder was nearly halfway over before either team could light the lamp. But Kenneth Brodie broke through for the Cyclones 9:31 into the second period.

The visitors then put the game away in the third period. Charlie Ross, Keenan Schneider and Justin Tremblay all scored for the Cyclones.

Jeffrey Kreidler made 45 saves for the Thunder, but at the other end, Logan Abric stopped all 58 shots he faced to earn the shutout for the Cyclones.
