TOPSHAM — As the Midcoast Woodbank gears up for its crucial wood distribution in January 2025, the organization is issuing a call to action for volunteers and corporate partners to join hands in providing essential heating resources to families in need.

The Woodbank, a community-driven initiative committed to addressing the heating needs of families within the area of Freeport to Woolwich and Lisbon to Harpswell, is seeking volunteers to assist in the wood processing efforts. With a project history spanning three years and a goal to acquire and process over 100 cords of hardwood logs into firewood annually, the Woodbank plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable households facing the difficult choice between heating and other essential needs, according to a news release from Bruce Wildes with Midcoast Woodbank.

Processing wood every Saturday, the organization welcomes individuals of all ages and abilities to contribute their time and effort. The Woodbank invites prospective volunteers to participate in processing wood on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon; weather permitting.

To ensure a sustainable supply of wood for families in need, the Woodbank seeks corporate partners willing to contribute funds or firewood. By establishing partnerships with businesses in the community, the Woodbank aims to create a network of support that will have a lasting impact on the lives of those struggling to stay warm during the winter months.

To celebrate its achievements and raise funds for operational costs, the Woodbank is set to host its first Wood Bank-quet at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at the Holden Frost House, The Highlands, 7 Academy Lane in Topsham. This event is open to the public and features free beer, wine, and a buffet dinner (a $50 value). Volunteer opportunities are open to individuals, groups, and organizations interested in making a tangible difference in their community.

Those who cannot volunteer on-site also are encouraged to explore remote volunteer opportunities and support the Woodbank’s outreach efforts.
