Mildred (Furbush) Rideout

GREENE – Mildred (Furbush) Rideout, 96, the oldest citizen of Greene, passed away at her home on Monday, March 11, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Greene, the daughter of Roy Furbush and Mildred (Foster) Furbush.

She attended schools in Greene and Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School, class of 1945. Mildred also attended the Auburn Maine School of Commerce. On Oct. 30, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, Alan S. Rideout. They made their home and raised their two daughters, Barbara and Cindy-Lee in Greene. They shared 64 years together before he passed away in 2010.

Mildred was the head cook of Greene Central School for 12 years and then an office manager of the Adult Unit at Tri-County Mental Health in Lewiston for 20 years, retiring in 1991. Even after retirement, you would find her in her kitchen, cooking her famous mac and cheese or baking molasses cookies and apple pies for anyone and everyone in the community.

She was one of the organizers and past president of the Greene Central School PTA, a 4-H leader for the 4-H Club in Greene, assistant leaders for Girl Scout and Camp Fire Girls of America, assistant Red Cross First Aid instructor, a sewing instructor for the Farm Bureau and a former active member of the Androscoggin Grange #8 in Greene. Mildred volunteered her time as an airplane spotter in the 1940’s, WCCB Auctions, Make a Difference Day for SAD 52, at CMMC in the Day Surgery Dept. and contributed to the Red Cross Blood Drives.

Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whom each had a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her daughters, Cindy-Lee Rideout of Harpswell, and Barbara E. Kelley and husband Shawn P. Kelley of Greene, an adopted daughter, Susan Bubier; three grandchildren, Richard Alan Damon and wife Heidi, Casey-Lee Wright and husband Mike, Shawn P. Kelley, Jr. and wife Courtney Ainsworth; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Julie, John, Jake, and Nikki Soucy, and Kenny Stevens. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Alan S. Rideout; two grandchildren, Jamie Damon, and Alan Damon; two loving sisters, Betty Burgess and Inez Thompson, two brothers, Lawrence and Milton Furbush.

A very special thanks to Dr. Pam Wansker and Ken Finley for keeping her safe and making her dying wish come true.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2024, at the Greene Baptist Church, 102 Main Street, Greene, Maine 04236. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the spring at Valley Cemetery, Route 202, Greene, Maine 04236.
