Angela Todd

NORWAY — Norway Memorial Library is hosting Angela Todd to present a talk about Hortense Gardner Gates on Tuesday evening, March 19, at 6:30 p.m., at Norway Memorial Library. Hortense Gates was an outdoorswoman who lived in Norway and worked for the Advertiser Democrat. She published Camping for Girls, which prompted girls of all ages (especially young adult city girls) to get out in nature.

Gates also published many small books of poetry, focusing mainly on nature, mentioning well-known local natural spots. Her poetry is often about or dedicated to people in her circle. This talk focuses on the hidden history in Gates’ publications as part of Women’s History Month.

Angela Todd is an archivist and historian who works to save stories usually relegated to the sidelines of history – those of women, historically excluded people, and the everyday activities of women and families. She does this by building and saving family legacies and working with individuals to save their documents and photos. Angela has degrees in women’s studies, English, and cultural studies and recently moved back to her home state of Maine.

Norway Memorial Library is at 258 Main Street, Norway, Maine. For more information call 207-743-5309 ext. 1 or visit www.norwaymemoriallibrary.org.
