FARMINGTON — Most of those attending the Fire and Ice Festival Saturday afternoon, March 9, sported smiles as laughter rang out along much of Front Street.

A few young children voiced their displeasure at being confined, either in strollers or an adult’s arms.

Addison Decker and her cousin Maggie Baxter, both of Farmington were among the dozens who took advantage of horse drawn wagon rides. Afterwards they were able to get up close with a horse owned by Kenric Charles of Kingfield and even pat its nose.

Bethany Walters was there with her daughter Alannah and niece Mia Walters, all of Skowhegan. “We come every year,” she said. Mia was sipping on hot chocolate while Alannah warmed her hands over a roaring fire. Alannah liked going to the movies and the horse drawn wagon rides.

The trio was waiting to see Wonka at 3 p.m. They couldn’t see an earlier movie as planned as they were waiting for a wagon ride, Bethany said.

Jesse Seavey of Seavey Farm in North Anson brought a wagon for horses Ben and Bill to pull instead of the sleigh that was originally planned. After their ride, Cliff Boynton and his grandson, Elliott MacGregor went to the front of the team to pet Bill, the white horse of the team.

Representatives from Franklin Savings Bank said turnout had been good throughout the day. The hay maze, puppet show and wagon rides were popular, they stated. There’s not a lot of ice this year, one noted before mentioning cancellation of the sledding and tubing hill.

Much of Prescott Field was showing bare ground. In fact, the most ice at the festival was in the form of large blocks of ice at Pierce’s Ice Products tent. Tim Pierce and Hector Pietra-Santa had visitors write their name on a paper, then they carved the names in the ice.

Many children were seen with balloon creations crafted by Conjuring Carroll. Others were working on the scavenger hunt while some waited for free passes for a movie.

Cloudy skies and cool breezes didn’t seem to affect those enjoying the many free things families could enjoy.
