100 Years Ago: 1924

H.W. Ricker of Poland Spring is leaving Maine soon for California to look into California’s method of publicity. Mr. Richer is a born investigator and student — a judge of large businesses. He will bring back much information. Some day he will be appreciated by those whose chief activity is at present mean suspicions and envious obstruction.

50 Years Ago: 1974

The Auburn and Lewiston area 4-H clubs will hold their favorite food demonstration at 9 am on Saturday, March 16 at the New Auburn American Legion Hall on the corner of Cook and South Main Streets.

Area 4-H Clubs planning to participate are from Lewiston, the Chit Chats, led by Mrs. Suzanne Bourque; and from Auburn, the Lucky Stars, led by Mrs. Gertrude Perkins; the Chickadees, led by Mrs. Mary Jabbusch; the Pitch-In led by Mrs. Shirley Keene; and the Progressive Workers, led by Mrs. Cecile Bishop.

To date, 26 demonstrations will be shown by girls and boys ages nine to 12. From these, four demonstrations and two alternates from this area contest will be chosen to represent the L-A area in the Country Favorite Food Contest.

25 Years Ago: 1999

Nearly a year after Bates College students marched on the president’s home demanding sex crimes be taken more seriously, it appears the message got results.

Since the protest, several of the private school’s polices and programs have been rewritten.

When a formal sex assault complaint is filed against a student, a campus advisory is issued. But a college policy now requires that Lewiston Police also must be advised of the alleged  incident, said college spokesman Marc Glass.

Last fall, freshmen students assembled in the school  chapel where they listened to national speaker Katie Koestner who went public with her story of her rape on a date while she was a student at William and Mary College in 1990. Shas appeared on the cover of Time magazine, hosted a special on HBO and was the driving force behind a federal law guaranteeing crime victims a so-called bill of rights.
