The Maine Nordiques limited the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks’ shots Saturday night in a 4-1 victory in an NAHL East Division game at the Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, Connecticut.

Maine Nordiques goalie Carter Richardson only made 17 saves in the win.

“Looking why we forced them to shoot less is we forechecked smarter,” Nordiques coach Nick Skerlick said. “It actually threw us not forechecking well because we weren’t sending enough pressure. (Assistant) Coach (Ryan) Shelley made a big point: We needed to start finishing our checks, not just when the puck is around, but all over the ice. In the third period, they maybe had three shots and I don’t think they had a quality scoring chance the whole period.”

The Nordiques (34-13-6, 74 points) had four different goal scorers.

Danbury (14-31-8, 36 points) took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Falmouth native Cam Charron’s shot was the only one to get by Richardson in the game.

It was Charron’s first goal of the season.

Maine scored twice in the final 93 seconds of the middle period when Zion Green evened the game and Laurent Trepanier scored with two seconds remaining for a 2-1 lead to beat former Maine Nordiques 18U goalie Thomas Kiesewetter.

“Trepanier, who has been fighting pucks lately, I was really happy with his effort tonight,” Skerlick said. “I am hopeful that will start him up a bit.”

Kellen Murphy and Nils Forselius had the assists on Green’s tally.

“They were our best line in the third period without scoring a goal,” Skerlick said of Green, Forselius and Murphy.

Charles Tardif added an insurance marker midway through the third period.

Shane Kozlina slipped in a goal for a 4-1 lead with two seconds remaining in the third period.

Tomek Haula and Nick Ramm each had an assist in the third period.

Skerlick said Liam Gilmartin, who’s normally a forward, helped the team tonight by playing defense.

“He was easily one of our three best defensemen tonight, and he’s a forward,” Skerlick said. “It’s really special to see moments like that and the team rally around guys going the extra mile.”

The teams meet again this upcoming weekend at The Colisee. Friday’s contest is at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday’s game is at 7 p.m.
